BALTO Codes - Mobile, AL
The city of Mobile issued porcelain plates annually for three years from 1909
through 1911.  The first and last of these are known to have been manufactured by
the Baltimore Enamel & Novelty Company, although the 1910 plates are unmarked
and we are unsure of who made them.  Of the three, the 1909 is distinctive for
carrying BALTO's hand-written date code.  All examples I've seen have the same
code - "29" - indicating that perhaps the whole allotment ordered by the city was
produced in one lot in February of 1909.  Notably, the Mobile 1909 plates carry a
BALTO code unlike anything used on any other plate known - beneath the "29" is a
"10" and it is unclear exactly why this second number was included.
