BALTO Codes - Maine
Baltimore Enamel produced many of the Maine first issue plates - passenger,
dealer and motorcycle. Later, the Ingram-Richardson Company of Beaver Falls, PA
would be hired to manufacture some of the first issue Maine plates, but before that
happened, BALTO churned out thousands of pairs between 1905 and 1908. Around
plate #3400, the company stopped using its coding system and around #3600 began
marking plates with their oval seal, but prior to this they employed the hand-written
date code system and collectors can identify 11 different batches produced
between May of 1905 and August of 1908.
