BALTO Codes - Philadelphia, PA
The city of Philadelphia issued porcelain license plates for four years, from 1903
through 1906.  However, the only one of these plates which is marked by the
manufacturer is the last one.  It is unclear who made the first three issues, but the
1906 plates (both regular and vendor varieties) have the hand-written code
indicating that they were produced by the Baltimore Enamel & Novelty Company.
Although at least 2,500 of these plates were made, the only code collectors have
seen on the reverse is "125," suggesting that the entire allotment was produced in
one huge batch.  Oddly enough, the 1909 Vendor plates also carry a BALTO code -
"128" - which is unusually late for Baltimore Enamel to have still been using this
dating system.
