Massachusetts 1910 Mystery Codes
In 2009, Massachusetts collector Alan Young noticed odd markings on the
reverse of four-digit Massachusetts passenger porcelains.  In some cases, they
appear to be random blobs of red enamel.  But in other cases, they are clearly
defined numerals.  At first glance, they appear similar to the date coding system
The Baltimore Enamel & Novelty Company used from 1904 through early 1909.
However, the 1910 markings do not seem to have any relation to the date the
plates were manufactured.

It is possible they are something very mundane, such as a quality control mark
applied by a clerk checking the plates for quality.  It is notable that not all plates
bear these marks.  Pairs are known with the same mark on both plates.  For now,
they remain a mystery.
