St. Joseph Porcelain Census
St. Joseph is one of seven jurisdictions in Missouri known to have issued
porcelain license plates. Modelled after the Kansas City and Independence
porcelains before them, St. Joseph plates began on a large sized and rather
ornate base for the first two years before switching to a much smaller and simpler
design for 1915 & 1916.
The 1913 and 1914 St. Joseph porcelains were made in both passenger and dealer
variants, both of which are extremely tough to find. The last two years, however,
are much more obtainable, with a dozen known 1915s in collectors' hands, making
that year the most common of all. There is one unidentified non-passenger 1915
plate known with an "L" prefix, but other than that, all surviving 1915 & 1916
plates are passenger issues.
Below is a census of all known St. Joseph porcelain license plates. If you are
aware of any that do not appear on this list, please email me! THANKS!
