DECEMBER, 2006 - 1917 JEFFERSON COUNTY, FL
When this plate showed up along with a 1915 issue, they became only the fourth
and fifth plates known to exist from Jefferson County. The 1915 was not a new
discovery, but this striking red & white 1917 porcelain was a year nobody had
ever seen before.
JULY, 2006 - CALIFORNIA QUARTERMASTER MOTORCYCLE
50 years after the birth of ALPCA, so much research has been done that the
discovery of a new state-issued plate is virtually unheard of. When this oddball
showed up on EBAY, collectors were floored. There are now three varieties of
porcelain Quartermaster plates from California: passenger, trailer & motorcycle.
JULY, 2006 - 1908 LOUISVILLE, KY
When this Louisville 1907-08 plate turned up on EBAY, it became the oldest
known plate from Kentucky. Two years later it would lose that distinction (see
2008 discoveries), but nevertheless this unique and fascinating plate helped
collectors fill in one more piece in the mystery of Louisville porcelains.
APRIL 2006 - 1911 MISSISSIPPI
Although there has been a dated 1911 Mississippi plate around for decades, the
emergence of this second example is important because it makes a credible case
for arguing that 1911 was actually the first state issue. Whether or not this theory
is correct is still open to question, but the thought is an intriguing one!
MARCH 2006 - 1915 & 1916 CHILLICOTHE, MO
None of the porcelain collectors I know from my 20+ years of collecting had ever
heard of license plates from Chillicothe before - that is until Missouri collector
Larry Niederschulte got wind of their existence. After an aggressive advertising
campaign, he located two 1915s and three 1916s.
JANUARY, 2006 - 1916 GADSDEN COUNTY, FL
When an ALPCA member located this previously unknown Gadsden plate out of
the rough in the Florida panhandle, it became the earliest known plate from that
elusive county. The only other known Gadsden plates are two examples of a 1917
Private issue.
